Reading is a complex thinking process which involves far more than just being able to pronounce words.  To facilitate students making the meaning from what they read, there are three areas that will increase comprehension.  Building background knowledge about topics to be learned helps students to retain and understand the new information more easily.  Recognition of keywords allows students to focus on the meaning of the text instead of struggling with individual word meaning. Knowing when understanding during reading breaks down and what to do to fix it also allows for the reader to increase comprehension.  In this course, we will present strategies for helping students with these three areas for all levels of learners.
